The next generation of smart phones is already upon us. Apple Inc. CEO, Steve Jobs, had announced that Apple would release a new product, the iPhone, on January 9th, 2007. Jobs announced the release date of June 2007 during the keynote speech at the Macworld conference. The iPhone will be competing with other smart phones such as the Blackberry and the Treo. According to Apple, the iPhone will be the first phone to be fully touch-sensitive. There are no plastic buttons. The entire phone is just one touch screen, making it the first in its class. As an colleague of mine, Anderson Wright says, "Think Blackberry, just Mac'd. out."
However, the iPhone shows more promise that just another smart phone. According to Jobs, the iPhone will be an intelligent, user-friendly device that will combine the iPod, cell phone, and Internet into one package. Also, it will be the first cell phone to come fully functional with the operating system, OS 10 for Mac. With a 3.5 inch wide screen, super touch sensitivity, and 4-8 GB memory capacity, the iPhone should prove to be a formidable rookie.
The iPod form of the iPhone, while having many of the same features, will incorporate newer technology to make it even more dynamic and revolutionary. Instead of the traditional click wheel, touch sensory technology will take over and allow the user to scroll through music. Another radical feature is the use of positioning technology. Consumers may turn the iPhone horizontally or vertically while watching a movie and the movie screen accelerometer will automatically adjust to this change. Also, the brightness and contrast are automatically adjusted to provide a truly enriching, on-the-go video experience. These improvements in addition to a cosmetic makeover in the iPod department will make the iPhone very appealing.
Apple plans to follow through with its proposed goal of "intelligence meeting practicality". Due to the elimination of plastic buttons, you will be able to scroll through your contact list with a movement of your finger and an additional push on a contact's name will enable you to communicate. Additionally, call merging and a facelift to texting differentiate the iPhone from the rest. The new texting feature resembles that of the popular iChat feature on Macs.
