How to get the most out of iTunes

MOVIEiPHONE.com is a source for discussing iPhone movies, where to download iPhone movies, and where to get free iPhone movies.

Even at 99 cents a song, iTunes can get expensive; however, there are many freebies and deals to be found, if you know where to look.

iTunes' TV section often offers free shows and featurettes, especially during season premieres or when a show debuts. Often, a single episode is offered for free, to entice you to subscribe and pay for future episodes. It's a cool way to stock up on some video to watch during your down time, especially on shows you may have missed or never tried out.

There are a number of audio and video podcasts that can be downloaded for free. "Ask a Ninja" is a free video podcast, usually about three to five minutes long, that is often funnier than anything you see on TV sitcoms. VH-1 offers free podcasts featuring snippets from their hit shows like "Best Week Ever" that are great to collect and watch. "The Best of YouTube" podcast is another great freebie worth watching.

iPod games are sometimes available for free for a limited time when they are introduced, and some games offer a free demo with limited play. Demos are nice to have if you use your iPod to play games during breaks at work. If your free time is limited, why buy a whole game when a free demo can occupy you for 10 minutes at no charge?

iPod applications, or mini programs, is a new section of iTunes, and many of the "apps" are free if you check out the home page for specials. Some useful programs can be found there at no charge.

iTunes recently added a new "99 Cent Movie of the Week" rental special, offering some classic films that you can rent at a reduced price, as opposed to their $2.99 rate. Once you download the movie rental, you have thirty days to start your rental period before it deletes, and your rental period only lasts 24 hours from the point you press play. Rentals can be watched on your iPod, iPhone, or your TV if you have Apple TV.

Movie previews are always free on iTunes, and since many trailers often turn out to be better than the movie, they make for a nice three minute diversion.

Independent artists often offer one of their songs for free through iTunes, and these are usually offered on the store front page. It's a nice way to discover a new artist. More established artists will sometimes offer a freebie for promotional purposes, so keep checking iTunes on at least a weekly basis. Of course, you can often find free songs directly from many artists on their websites, so don't limit your search to just iTunes.

The "Complete My Album" option offers you the chance to buy a complete album, if you only bought some of the songs before. The rest of the songs you need to complete the album are offered at a reduced rate, but only for 30 days after you purchased a song from that album. After that, you have to pay full price.

If you are looking to upgrade your music to the higher quality sound and no restrictions offered by iTunes Plus, their "Upgrade My Library" option will do that, at an upgrade cost of 30 cents per song, 60 cents per music video, or a complete album for 30% of the original price.

Signing up for iTunes alerts, which are sent by email, is a great way to find out about freebies and specials. With a little digging, there are some gems to be found.
