This "iPhone movie" is a charming short film that is both inventive and slick, and yet incredibly it is all shot and edited only on an iPhone 4.
By mounting the iPhone on professional tripod and dolly rigs, the filmmakers were able to obtain a stability of shots and fluidity of camera movements to give this film a professional "Hollywood look". And even though the iPhone's consumer-grade automatic exposure is noticeable in some shots, the film stands out by the type of shots one can get with such a small "video camera", particularly the passenger's eye view from a toy model train.
The POV shots taken from the iPhone on the toy train remind me of INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) with the exciting roller coaster ride sequence on a runaway mine train. Today, the mine car POV shots would perhaps be done as a 3D animation (unless Christopher Nolan was directing it), but in 1984, Steven Spielberg had a miniature scale mine train created and shot scenes with the miniature in stop animation.
For the POV shots of the mine train careening down the track, Spielberg and Industrial Light & Magic used a 35mm DSL still camera with a specialized motor to shoot the POV shot as the still camera advanced down the track, effectively simulating a movie camera shooting stop animation.
Though the iPhone has limitations as a movie making device, the filmmakers took advantage of the iPhone's strength - which is it's size. They constructed a short film around a signature shot, which would be unique to the iPhone. By mounting it on a toy train to shoot a POV shot in real time, they gave us a glimpse at a unique perspective - being at the eye level of a toy train.
And what's surprising about it is that you actually get lost for a moment on this toy train.
When producing a film with production limitations, the smart filmmaker finds something unique about his production that he can capitalize on, even if a gimmick, and then promotes it to the public as a must-see of great cinematic innovation.

I enjoyed this short iPhone movie. It tugs at the heart strings and reminds us that at any age we can long for the fascination of our childhood.
It’s amazing what we can do now with such a little device as an iPhone. It proves that great filmmaking is not in the expense of your tools but what you do with the ones you have.
