Just wondering if Jason Bourne is on a family plan...

We just saw The Bourne Ultimatum this afternoon.

Having seen the previous two Bourne movies, I knew what I was in for. The quick cut directing, the great car chase scenes and let's not forget Bourne's ability to stay one step ahead of his foils. That's what I like the most - this guy's ability to outfox the adversary.

The action/suspense movie has been re-defined by the Bourne franchise. It's kind of like the video game age has taken over the spy movie genre. Lots of gadgets and one-on-one combat during a roller coaster ride to a conclusion. Any Bourne movie makes any Pierce Brosnan James Bond flick look like any Hugh Grant yawnfest. There's no comparison. A Bourne movie sucks you in. Suspend belief? Hell ya.

We all know that the CIA and NSA are run by a cadre of evil doers, bent on being duplicitous, dastardly civil servants for a $65,000 a year white collar position and the promise of a government pension. Who wouldn't want to work at a command post, eavesdropping on people in Europe via street cameras, cell phone taps and GPS imagery. For that great salary, where do I sign up?

And then there's Matt Damon, he who has breathed life into the Bourne role. Never before has a 5 foot 8 inch Caucasian kicked so much bad guy ass in a single picture. Damon's a pleasure to watch.

Damon filmed the first Bourne epic about the same time his buddy Ben Affleck was shooting Gigli. How's that for a career reality check? You'd think, being two Boston Lads, Affleck would have taken Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken to heart and simply followed closely behind Damon, as Matt made his successful career decisions. Didn't happen. Ben must have mistaken Charlie Sheen for Matt Damon.

So I totally enjoyed The Bourne Ultimatum. But if I had one gripe, it would be on how the plot relied so heavily on the use of cell phones. The movie was 111 minutes long and I saw enough cell phone action to train me for work in a mall kiosk. There were Nokias and Razors among the lot. The iPhone wasn't released prior to filming, otherwise you probably would have seen one of many hitmen get his instructions to kill Bourne while he was reading Drudge, checking up on his 401k, or reading whatever civil servant hitmen read when they have a moment to surf the web.

That's not to mention the roaming charges the CIA is racking up. All we hear about these days is how much the Iraqi War is costing us per day and how expensive it is to fire a single minuteman missile. But it's these seemingly smaller expenses like CIA cell phone roaming and text messaging charges that are going to break this country's financial backbone.

And another thing about the film's cell phones. Where are the lost signals? Am I to believe that the cell phone signals in Tangiers are superior to those in Tampa? C'mon. I'm willing to suspend belief only so far, but no dropped calls, no data loss? How many cell towers are in Tangiers, anyway?

Wait a minute. Now I get it. Think about it - the movie's rooftop action? Cell phone reception is always better on a rooftop. That explains why there weren't lost calls. The Bourne Ultimatum just got a hell of a lot more realistic.
